The Thar region of Sindh has been plagued by drought for three years, and in that time, malnutrition has hit an all-time high.
1600 children have died, Over 400 this year alone.
In the last two months alone more than 100 children
have died in hospitals dueto hunger related illnesses.
Sadly, the number of deaths is increasing rapidly.
Thousands of animals have died,
further aggravating the malnutrition problems
and famine-related death rates.
More than 150000 people have been displaced
from their homes to avoid starvation.
.The neighbouring desert areas in Siraiki
belt and India are also having drought problems,
but the mass scale deaths of children and displacement
of residents sets the situation in Tharkarpar apart.
The consensus is that the government has criminally failed to act
and provide relief to the people of Thar.
The mishandling of the situation by corrupt political and bureaucratic forces is
directly responsible for the suffering, displacement and deaths experienced in Tharkarpar.
