The US State Department has documented cases of extreme, ongoing abuse against Sindhi, Baloch, and Pashtun advocates for democracy by the Pakistani state for decades. Because of these records, the state has a rating of only 37 on the Freedom House Democracy Index. Despite this, the US has officially invited Pakistan to the 2021 Summit for Democracy.
The US plans to urge states at the Summit for Democracy to target corruption and human rights abusers within their countries, but has declined to comment on how states like Pakistan will actually face sanctions for the widespread human rights abuses.
