A cultural get together was held at a historic location of Manchester's Peace Gardens in the City Centre. This gathering was attended by the Sindhi Community in Manchester and observed by number of diverse Christmas shoppers of Manchester on Sunday afternoon. People from all walks of life including their families who travelled all way from Bradford, New castle, Preston and other cities of north West of the UK participated with great zeal and zest in the event.
By celebrating this day in Manchester and Sheffield, Sindhi Sangat, UK and World Sindhi Congress expressed their full support and participation in Sindhi Topi and Ajrak Day (Sindhi Cap and Scarf Wearing Day) which has being celebrated all over the world on December 6th, 2009.
President of SSUK Abdul Jabbar Qureshi stated that December 6th should be marked as day of celebration of Sindhi culture icons every year around the world. He said that we live in multi cultural world and the only way we can learn to respect other cultures is by recognizing and celebrating our own culture and heritage.
Imdad Ali Odho, a senior sindhi journalist said that Sindh is part of Pakistan and Sindhi culture and heritage should be a proud representation of Pakistani society. He said that since the inclusion of Sindh in Pakistan we Sindhis have faced the intense loss of indigenous heritage and our resources.
Senior Sindhis such as Dr Daulat Ram, Dr. Shabir Ahmed Rahujo and others expressed their views supported to respect each others culture and condemn the discriminative attitude of certain media anchors.
Dr. Rubina Shaikh of World Sindhi Congress affirmed that it is extremely important for a real multicultural society to have a strong sense of belonging while allowing people to maintain their identity and emotional bonds with the country of origin. She said the Pakistani establishment has violated constantly The United Nations Treaty on International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by systematic suppression and exclusion of the Sindhi language, culture and Sufi heritage.
The event was covered by DM digital Television Manchester and was shown on their channel on several occasions. Refreshment with warm drink was served to all participants. Gul Sanai, thanked all participants and the media personals for taking their precious time to make this even successful with the promise that Sindhi nation would celebrate 6 December as their culture day every year all around the world.
