WSC executive committee meeting was held in Bradford. The meeting was presided by WSC acting Chairman Umaid Ali Laghari. The meeting strongly condemned the Pakistani Prime Minister’s announcement regarding the construction of Kalabagh Dam.
The meeting emphasized that the construction of Kalabagh Dam is the matter of life and death for Sindh and Sindhis. It said that the Pakistani establishment only cares about the interests of Punjab. Despite the rejection by the provincial assemblies of Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan, the federal government is planning to construct this dam only to please Punjabi landlords and elite.
World Sindhi Congress plans to organize a seminar in UK next month to create awareness among the World community regarding the construction of Kalabagh Dam. In a letter to World Bank and other heads of states, WSC has requested that any foreign assistance and funding should not be provided for such a controversial project. The construction of Kalabagh Dam project will have disastrous effects on the environment, and culture and economy of the People of Sindh, NWFP, and
Meeting also demanded the Sindh government to join NWFP and Balochistan leadership in opposing this project.
WSC also requested all the Sindhis in UK and USA to write/contact to their constituency’s elected representatives seeking their support in opposing the construction of Kalabagh Dam.
